NHS Flu Vaccination close to Walkley
Walkley Library stands at the junction of Walkley Road and South Road, is a Grade II listed building, and is the only library in Sheffield to have received Carnegie funding. Walkley Community Centre on Fir Street and Upperthorpe Library are close by.
The Ponderosa, a recreation area of more than 25 acres between Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe, is one of the three Crookesmoor parks, along with Weston Park and Crookes Valley Park. Upperthorpe, Netherthorpe and Crookes are all close by, and the tram stop at Hillsborough is also nearby. Busy days can make a pharmacy trip more of a job than it should be.

Cost
There is no charge for the NHS flu vaccination when you are in an eligible group. If you are not sure you qualify, your GP practice or the pharmacist can advise.
When to get help elsewhere
- Call NHS 111 if you need urgent advice that is not an emergency, or if the pharmacy is closed. This is the right number when it is not an emergency.
- Call 999 for a medical emergency and use it straight away if someone develops a severe allergic reaction after a vaccination, with breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
- Get in touch with your GP if flu symptoms are getting worse, or if you are in a clinical risk group and become unwell.
- If you think you have flu, please ring the pharmacy ahead of your visit.

Who qualifies for a free flu vaccination this season
For 2026 to 2027 the NHS offers a free vaccination to the adult groups below. Most can have it from 1 October 2026, and pregnant women from 1 September.
- People aged 65 and over.
- Adults aged 18 to under 65 who have certain long-term health conditions.
- Anyone who is pregnant, at any stage.
- Carers: people who receive carer's allowance, or who are the main carer of an older or disabled person.
- Residents of long-stay residential care homes.
- Close contacts of someone with a weakened immune system.
- Frontline social care workers who cannot get flu vaccination through an employer-led occupational health service.
- People aged 16 and over who sleep rough or use homeless hostels or night shelters.
Most children are vaccinated through school or their GP practice, and a few pharmacies vaccinate children aged 2 to under 18 who are in a clinical risk group. If you are unsure, ask the pharmacy.

A confidential conversation
Your conversation with the pharmacist is private, and they explain what will happen before anything is done.
The day after
Most people have no more than a tender arm or a bit of tiredness for a day or two. Resting and drinking fluids helps if you do feel off.
You will be offered the vaccination again next season, because the viruses that cause flu change from year to year and your protection wears off.
A few things to bear in mind
Wear something with sleeves you can easily push up, as the vaccination goes into the top of the arm.
The pharmacist will ask about allergies and past reactions to vaccinations, so have these in mind. A high temperature is worth mentioning, because it may be better to wait.
Anyone in a clinical risk group should bring details of their conditions. And if you already have flu-like symptoms, call the pharmacy before leaving home.
