What is the NHS flu vaccination service?
The NHS offers a free flu vaccination each autumn and winter to people who are more likely to become seriously ill from flu. Many community pharmacies take part. Eligibility is set nationally, and the pharmacy confirms which groups it can vaccinate.
Who is eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination?
These adult groups are eligible for the 2026 to 2027 season from 1 October 2026, unless stated. The pharmacy will check with you.
Adults aged 65 years and over.
Adults aged 18 to under 65 with certain long-term health conditions.
Women who are pregnant, at any stage.
People who receive carer's allowance, or are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person.
Residents of long-stay residential care homes.
Close contacts of people with a weakened immune system.
Frontline social care workers without access to employer-led occupational health.

Having your flu vaccination

The vaccination is given in the upper arm and takes a few minutes. The pharmacy may record it on your GP record.
Before your vaccination
A few things help the visit go smoothly.
- Wear a top with sleeves that roll up easily.
- Tell the pharmacist about any allergies and about any previous reaction to a vaccination.
- Tell the pharmacist if you are unwell with a high temperature. They may suggest you wait.
- Bring the details of your long-term health conditions if you are in a clinical risk group.
- If you have flu-like symptoms, please telephone the pharmacy before you come.
In the pharmacy
Please telephone the pharmacy to ask about availability and what to bring.

After your vaccination
Most people notice no more than a sore arm or feeling a little tired for a day or so. Rest and drink plenty of fluids if you feel unwell.
Flu vaccination is offered every year, because flu viruses change and protection fades over time.
What does it cost?
The NHS flu vaccination is free for eligible groups. If you are not in an eligible group, ask your GP practice or pharmacist for advice.
Areas the full page set would cover
After approval, a local page is written for each of these areas, with local travel and GP practice information. Nothing is published until the pharmacy has approved it.
What patients say

“Entirely lives up to the name. Had a nightmare with my last pharmacy and since moving here, my experience in sorting my meds has been so much easier. Extremely polite and helpful staff. As a pharmacy professional myself, highly recommend.”
“Great pharmacy in my eyes. They always deliver my prescription in time. Always polite staff when delivering. Really helpful when I cannot get to the pharmacy in person. Would definitely recommend this service.”
