NHS Flu Vaccination close to Nether Edge & Sharrow
Nether Edge and Sharrow stretches from the busy inner-city streets around London Road out towards leafier suburbs such as Sharrow Head and Sharrow Vale. Chelsea Park, one of the city's Historic Parks, was laid out as the private gardens of Brincliffe Towers in 1852 and was given to the people of Sheffield in 1925. The Kingswood Building of the former Nether Edge Hospital is still a Grade II listed landmark.
Abbeydale Road, part of the A621, runs south-west from Sharrow, and the area takes its Abbeydale name from the abbey at Beauchief, which stood from the 12th century until 1537. Abbeydale Picture House is a former cinema that opened in 1920 as the largest and most luxurious in Sheffield. Community places include Common Ground Community Centre on Machon Bank, Sharrow Community Forum and Highfield Library and Sharrow Family Hub on London Road.

A confidential conversation
You talk it through with the pharmacist privately, so you know what to expect before you start.
When to get help elsewhere
- Call 999 for a medical emergency, especially if someone has signs of a severe allergic reaction after a vaccination, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
- Call NHS 111 if you need urgent advice that is not an emergency, or if the pharmacy is closed.
- Speak to your GP if flu symptoms are getting worse, or if you are in a clinical risk group and feel unwell.
- If you have flu symptoms, telephone the pharmacy rather than visiting.
Free flu vaccination: the eligible groups for 2026 to 2027
The NHS decides each year who can have the flu vaccination free. For this season, the adult groups are listed here. You only need to fit one of them.
- Anyone aged 65 or over.
- Adults under 65 whose long-term health condition places them in a clinical risk group.
- Women who are pregnant, whatever stage they are at.
- People who get carer's allowance, or who are the main carer for an older or disabled person.
- People living in a long-stay residential care home.
- Those who live with or are close to someone whose immune system is weakened.
- Frontline social care workers who have no access to an employer-led occupational health vaccination.
- Anyone aged 16 or over who sleeps rough or uses a homeless hostel or night shelter.
Pregnant women can have it from 1 September 2026 and the other groups from 1 October 2026. Children are mostly done through school or the GP practice, and some pharmacies vaccinate children aged 2 to under 18 in a clinical risk group, so ask if you are unsure.
Is it free?
If you are in one of the eligible groups, the NHS flu vaccination is free. People outside those groups should ask their GP practice or the pharmacist what is available to them.
What to expect afterwards
A sore arm is the most common effect, and some people feel a little tired for a day or so. If you feel unwell, rest and drink plenty of fluids.
Protection fades with time and flu viruses change, which is why the vaccination is offered again every autumn and winter.
What patients say
